Our live recording room is cozy, comfortable and warm sounding. Perfect for intimate jazz sessions, but also very capable of recording bands - indie, rock, alternative...

If you love the energy you get on stage, live to tape is your friend. It preserves the pocket, the push and pull, and the musical conversations that make a take feel alive. At That Little Studio in Los Angeles, we help jazz ensembles, rock bands, and singer songwriters capture that feel quickly, cleanly, and with just enough isolation to mix with confidence. You leave with mixes you love, not a hard drive full of homework.

Why Live To Tape Works

  • Cohesion and feel: Playing together helps phrasing, dynamics, and tempo breathe naturally. Fewer overdubs can mean more connection in the final record.

  • Speed: When a band is rehearsed, live to tape gets you from first mic check to keeper takes fast, with fewer editing rabbit holes.

  • Better decisions: Hearing a near finished sound in the room helps you commit to tones that serve the song. The result is a more musical record and a smoother mix.

Is a professional room worth it? If you want the interplay of a real ensemble, good mic placement, and a mix you can approve in days rather than months, yes, recording studios are worth it. You are paying for engineering, a room that flatters instruments, instrument options, quick setup, and mix turnaround that respects your timeline.

Our Live Room, Your Sound

The live room at That Little Studio is voiced for small to medium ensembles. We set you up for bleed that sounds musical, while keeping enough separation for edits and mix control.

  • Drums: Ludwig kit ready to go; we ask that drummers bring their own snare and cymbals, or bring your own shells and we can combine for a custom feel.

  • Keys: Chickering upright piano and Fender Rhodes on site, tuned and maintained.

  • Guitars and extras: Hollow body Gibson, Martin 00 15, Roland Juno add useful analog flavor when the track wants it.

Jazz groups love the natural glue of piano, bass, and drums sharing air. Rock and indie bands often track live drums and bass, then layer guitars and keys right after. Singer songwriters can capture vocal and instrument together, then do light pick ups for polish.

How A Live Session Flows

Here is our typical live to tape workflow, tuned for feel and efficiency:

1. Setup and soundcheck: We position the ensemble for eye contact and good bleed, place mics with intention, and dial cue mixes so everyone hears what matters.

2. Dummy takes: Low pressure passes to confirm balances, click choices, and count offs. We adjust while you play.

3. Extended takes: We roll for three to six minutes at a time, sometimes longer for jazz heads and solos, and focus on musical arcs rather than bar by bar perfection.

4. Pick ups: If the bridge was magic but the tag needs another lap, we grab it fast.

5. Light edits: We comp sensible sections that keep the vibe. No grid jail unless the song demands it.

6. Quick mix turnaround: First mixes typically arrive within one to three working days, with up to three rounds of revisions. You sign off, then we deliver a studio master optimized for streaming.

Prep That Pays Off

A great live take starts before you walk in.

  • Arrangements: Lock forms, endings, and cue points. Decide who leads count offs and where to place them so everyone breathes together.

  • Tempo map or no click: If you want a click, decide the few places it might drop out for a rall or tag. If you do not want a click, rehearse the transitions that tend to drift.

  • Reference mixes: Send any reference tracks that represent bass tone, drum ambience, vocal brightness, or piano decay you love. We build your mix to support that vision.

  • Gear choices: Decide which instrument pairings matter for the core tone, like upright piano plus brush kit or Rhodes plus tight kick.

Live To Tape Jazz, By Design

Our Live to Tape Jazz package is a 4 hour, engineer led session in the upgraded live room. It includes mic placement tailored to your lineup, a cohesive ensemble sound with separation for edits, multitrack capture, a fast first mix, revision rounds, and a studio master. It is built to get you in, play musically, and leave with a release ready result.

Hybrid: Live Beds With Selective Overdubs

A favorite flow for rock and indie:

  • Track drums and bass live with a scratch vocal and guide guitars.

  • Keep the best full take as the spine.

  • Re track guitars or keys for tone sculpting while the feel stays intact.

  • Cut keeper vocals and BVs while the band still feels the take in their bones.

This approach preserves the optimum locked groove while letting you refine focal parts.

What To Pack

  • Instruments and spares: fresh strings and sticks, drum key, capos, reeds, extra batteries.

  • Session notes: forms, lyric sheets with bar counts, and count off plans.

  • References: two or three tracks that nail the sonics you are chasing.

  • Tech: hard drive or cloud link for any stems or guide tracks, phone chargers, in ear tips if you use them.

  • Comfort: water bottle, light snacks. We also have a sunny patio and a small bar for breaks, with El Taurino next door and Northgate Market across the street.

Common Questions, Straight Answers

  • Are there any independent studios in LA? Yes. Los Angeles has many indie rooms. That Little Studio is a boutique, owner operated spot between Downtown and Koreatown focused on personal, efficient live and hybrid workflows.

  • Are recording studios worth it? If you value great rooms, experienced engineering, reliable gear, and quick mixes that translate, yes. You save time and avoid weeks of patching together fixes at home.

  • How much should a live sound engineer charge? For live recording in a studio context, expect rates to be folded into a session price or billed separately. At That Little Studio, it is $100 per hour on weekdays and $125 per hour on weekends, engineer included, 4 hour minimum. Mixing is included in many packages with up to three revisions and a studio master.

  • Why is studio time so expensive? You are paying for the room, mics, instruments, maintenance, engineering skill, editing and mixing time, and fast turnaround. Headline rates you see online often exclude an engineer, mixing, or revisions. We keep it transparent so you can budget clearly.

If you are comparing options across the city, watch for teaser prices that apply to off peak hours or room only listings. Ask what is included, whether an engineer is included, minimum booking length, weekend premiums, and what mixing or revisions cost. Clarity up front saves money and stress later.
